Jumper: The World. Francis’s life and legacy touched so many people and his life and his passing resonates globally.




He is repped by the King of Wands, a passionate leader with deep beliefs and this is crossed by the Lovers, showing his consecration to the divine and commitment to shepherding the Church.

The foundation card, Ace of Swords is his ability to discern, a fundamental part of his life and definitely shows his Jesuit education and teaching. For Catholics, this can also represent the Archangel Micael’s Sword of Truth, another reflections of discernment. 

In the Higher aspect position, the Seven of Cups reversed appears. I’m surprised this is a minor arcana card. Right now, I’m taking this to reflect that there was much work he felt he couldn’t complete. In fact, the other two reversed cards in this spread, the Queen of Cups in the immediate future, and the Justice card, in the Outside influence position, may also reflect that. That he didn’t thing he had completed his mission. I’m going to think more on these two.

In the past position, we have the three of cups, a card of celebration and from what I’ve read in his autobiography (so far), he had a wonderful close family relationship and celebrated his faith throughout his life. 

So reading across Past, Present, Future: 3 of Cups, King of Wants and Lovers, Queen of Cups reversed. Celebration, Consecration, Leadership and feeling work is yet finished. 

In the column, there’s 5 of Cups, Justice reversed, 4 of Pentacles and 6 of Pentacles. Five of cups is such a card of mourning that I’m taking it as many of feel his loss acutely. I’m reserving judgement on that Justice reversed card. Is it Francis feeling work undone, or that many of us feel that his legacy of progessive-for-church (which is still conservative) will be abandoned. 

In the Things to be Aware of position, we have the 4 of Pentacles. There’s going to be a lot of jockeying in the upcoming conclave. There is definately a faction of the Vatican and of Catholics that want a return to the pre-Vatican II era. This faction includes people such as Leonard Leo, Opus Dei, JD Vance and other regressive organizations. 

In the outcome position is the 6 of Pentacles. In this deck, I notice that the poor child is standing under a sign with scales and they are evenly balanced. She also has 3 pentacles and is receiving a fourth. My best case scenario of this card would be that the next pope also favors the poor, the homeless and will act as a servant-Leader. I say that with fingers crossed.

There’s going to be contest - or the fear of one - that tries to return the Church to more regressive policies. 

Finally, from the Influence of the Angels deck, I asked to see the card of the next pope (obviously this as of today, 4-21-2025 and may change) and drew the King of Cups. In this deck that represents an old-soul wisdom and compassionate leader, Zodiac signs would be Cancer, Pisces of Scorpio.

The Emperor's jumped as I shuffled and I did not expect this.  Cardinal Pizzaballa is the Patriarch of Jerusalem, a post he didn't expect or feel qualified for. Keep that in mind. I leaned into this when  I drew, The Moon, Ace of Pentacles  and Knight or Wands reversed. On the one hand, the Moon is hidden depths, on the other, it can be unknown information.  The Vatican has posted information on all the Cardinals (their positions on certain topics! Age, education) He is a Franciscan and a Taurus. My initial reading after Pope Francis died, was the next pope would be a water sign. We'll see. I think there's solid ground for this man (Ace) but the Knight of Wands reversed could mean he gets stuck/stymied, either in Conclave or as Pope.  My mom died two weeks ago. I feel suspended in time and space and rather lost. Em Elle Tarot has has given me great readings and now I am pulling for myself. What I am leaving behind, What is holding me during this transtion, Where will I land. Knight of Swords, The Lovers, King of Cups As I laid the cards, the Knight is flying to the left, out of the spread. With mom passing (for one thing) there is one less worry about her care and her situation. I know her nursing home was top notch, but it's still hard to accept she needed care I couldn't provide. Losing Medicaid was constantly on my mind, as well as the pre-grief of knowing the end was near. This owl is behind me, although there are some feathers still left behind. I know I'm a worrier - this may be the ends I need to clear up. Right now I feel supported by my ancestors and the love I shared with my parents.
